700 Marines Activated For L.A. Area Amid ICE Protests; Newsom Says He'll Sue

The military has activated about 700 active-duty Marines who could be sent to Los Angeles, joining National Guard troops who were sent to the city to respond to protests, the U.S. Northern Command said in a statement.

Members of the Marine Corps could start arriving in the Los Angeles area as soon as Tuesday, a defense official told CBS News. The Marines are based in Twentynine Palms, a city east of Los Angeles.

Northern Command said the Marines will "seamlessly integrate" with hundreds of members of the National Guard to protect "federal personnel and federal property." They have been trained in "de-escalation, crowd control and standing rules for the use of force," the military added.

RFK Jr. Removes All 17 Members Of CDC's Vaccine Advisory Committee

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Monday he is removing all 17 sitting members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's vaccine advisory committee and replacing them with new members.

The Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) makes recommendations on the safety, efficacy and clinical need of vaccines.

The world’s population expanded from 2010 to 2020, and so did most religious groups, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of more than 2,700 censuses and surveys.

Christians remained the world’s biggest religious group. But Christians (of all denominations, counted as one group) did not keep pace with global population growth from 2010 to 2020.

Collectively, 75.8% of the world’s people identified with a religion as of 2020. The remaining 24.2% did not identify with any religion, making people with no religious affiliation the third-largest group in this study, after Christians and Muslims.

Paramount To Cut 3% Of U.S. Workforce As It Deepens Cost-Cutting

Paramount Global told employees it would be reducing its workforce by 3.5% and that the majority of the impacted staff would be alerted on Tuesday.

It’s the latest round of layoffs at the media company as it contends with cord-cutting and prepares to merge with Skydance Media.

Layoffs have been taking place across the media industry in recent weeks, with reported headcount reductions at Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Study Finds Little Agreement Between Republicans And Democrats On Media Sources They Trust

A new survey that probes the level of trust Democrats and Republicans have for news sources finds the business-oriented publications Forbes and The Wall Street Journal share an unusual distinction: They’re the only two of 30 news sources that sympathizers for both parties told the Pew Research Center they’re more likely to trust than distrust.

Pew’s survey, released Tuesday, illustrates how the country’s political polarization has members of both parties in different media silos. Democrats trust more news sources than Republicans, and rarely do their tastes intersect.

Wisconsin Farmers, Processors Push For State And Federal Support To Continue Growing Dairy Industry

June marks Dairy Month in Wisconsin. As people appreciate the industry for the food and the economic impact it provides, processors and farmers are calling for continued support from lawmakers.

On Tuesday, the Joint Finance Committee will address the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Protection portions of the budget. They are expected to discuss continuing dairy processor grants at the state level. The other agenda item is the continuation of the Wisconsin Initiative for Agriculture Exports, which would boost distribution.

Multiple Wisconsin Hospital Systems Remove Diversity Language From Their Websites

Multiple Wisconsin health care systems have removed diversity, equity and inclusion language or resources from their websites in the wake of President Donald Trump’s federal ban on funding for DEI programming.

The systems include SSM Health, Aurora Health, UW Health and, most recently, Ascension. Froedtert ThedaCare Health has maintained its DEI webpage, though it removed a link to its equal employment opportunity policy in recent months.

Taylor County Judge Denies Tribe’s Request To Halt Approval For Mining Company’s Drill Plans

A Taylor County judge has denied a northern Wisconsin tribe’s request to temporarily halt state approval of a mining company’s plans to drill for copper and gold on Forest Service land near Medford.

In February, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued a general construction site permit for mining company Green Light Wisconsin to drill at the Bend Deposit in Taylor County. The deposit is believed to contain 4.2 million tons of mostly copper and gold.

Trump Administration Urges Court Not To Dismiss Case Against Dugan

The Trump administration argued June 9 that charges should not be dropped against a Wisconsin judge who was indicted for allegedly helping a man who is in the country evade U.S. immigration agents seeking to arrest him in her courthouse.

Attorneys for the U.S. Department of Justice urged a federal judge to reject a motion filed by Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan seeking to dismiss the charges against her, saying doing so would be “unprecedented” and allow judges to be above the law.

Two straight injury-filled seasons ultimately spelled the end for Jaire Alexander with the Packers, who released the star cornerback Monday to end an offseason saga in which the two sides tried to find a middle ground.

"In his seven seasons with the Packers, Jaire established himself as one of the premier players in the NFL at one of the game's most challenging positions. His contributions to our organization were felt on the field, in the locker room and in our community, and he will be missed," Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said in a statement. "We appreciate all he gave and we wish him all the best moving forward."
