Supreme Court's Alito Pauses Texas Law On Illegal Border Crossings

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito on Monday temporarily blocked a judicial decision that would let a Texas law take effect to give state officials broad powers to arrest, prosecute and order the removal of people who illegally cross the border from Mexico.

Alito issued his order - requested by Democratic President Joe Biden's administration - after the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Saturday paused a federal judge's ruling that had blocked the Republican-backed Texas law.

Supreme Court Says Trump Can Appear On 2024 Ballot, Overturning Colorado Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday said states cannot bar former President Donald Trump from the ballot using a rarely invoked provision of the 14th Amendment, overturning a decision from Colorado's top court and handing the GOP presidential front-runner a victory in an unprecedented case that threatened to derail his bid to return to the White House.

In its opinion on Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court said only Congress can enforce the clause.

Administration Officials Watered Down Kamala Harris' Gaza Speech Before Delivery

Before Vice President Kamala Harris delivered pointed remarks Sunday about the need for an immediate six-week cease-fire between Israel and Hamas as part of a deal to release hostages, officials at the National Security Council toned down parts of her speech.

The original draft of Harris’ speech, when it was sent to the National Security Council for review, was harsher on Israel about the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the need for more aid than were the remarks she ultimately delivered, according to one of the current officials and the former official.

Gas Prices Rise Ahead Of Spring Break Season

Brace for rising gas prices this March and April with the average national price climbing 10 cents. Gasoline prices can drive consumer sentiment and how positively or negatively Americans view the economy.

The nation's average gasoline price for unleaded climbed 10 cents to $3.34 per gallon Sunday from a week before. The national average is up 22 cents from a month ago but 3.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

Evers Signs Republican-Authored Bill To Expand Wisconsin's State Income Tax Credit For Child Care

Democratic Gov. Tony Evers signed a Republican-authored bill on March 4 that dramatically expands the state child care tax credit, days after vetoing three other GOP bills that would have delivered $800 million in tax cuts.

The governor signed the bill at a charter school in Waukesha. He said in a statement that he approved the measure because “the cost of child care is too darn high.”

A leading Democratic super PAC is up with a $2 million ad buy attempting to paint newly declared Wisconsin Senate GOP candidate Eric Hovde as an out-of-state California banker.

“Multi-millionaire California banker Eric Hovde: On Wisconsin's side?” the ad, shared exclusively with POLITICO and airing statewide in Wisconsin, asks. “Don't bank on it.”

The campaign, run by Senate Majority PAC, comes just days after Hovde officially announced his bid to unseat two-term Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) in a critical race for control of the upper chamber.
