Trump Announces Pause On Project Freedom

President Trump announced a pause on the U.S. operation Project Freedom on Tuesday evening based on a request from Pakistan and other countries but added that the U.S. Navy blockade of ships in the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place.

“Based on the request of Pakistan and other Countries, the tremendous Military Success that we have had during the Campaign against the Country of Iran and, additionally, the fact that Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement with Representatives of Iran, we have mutually agreed that, while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom (The Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed,” the president wrote in a post on Truth Social.

The U.S. Debt Now Exceeds The Country's GDP. Should We Worry?

America's national debt has surpassed the country's gross domestic product for the first time since World War II, marking a stark increase in the government's fiscal burden.

Debt held by the public stood at $31.27 trillion at the end of April, edging above the U.S. GDP of $31.22 trillion between April 2025 and March 2026, according to a recent analysis by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Hut 8 Signs About $10 Billion AI Data Center Lease In Texas

Hut 8 said on Wednesday it had signed a 15-year lease worth $9.8 billion for its Beacon Point ‌data center campus in Texas, as demand rises for infrastructure to train ‌and serve AI models.

Shares of the Miami, Florida-based AI data center developer jumped more than 10% ​in premarket trading.

The deal is yet another signal of growing demand for power and data center capacity as companies race to expand their AI capabilities.

The agreement covers 352 megawatts (MW) capacity in the first phase of the project with an undisclosed ‌tenant. Hut 8 said the ⁠client would install computing equipment at the site to support large-scale AI training and operations.

Ramaswamy Projected To Win, Advance To General Election For Ohio Governor

Republican Vivek Ramaswamy has defeated Casey Putsch, and will move on to face Democrat Amy Acton in the general election to determine who will take the governor’s mansion in Ohio, Decision Desk HQ projects.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has reached his term limit, opening the seat for the upcoming term. Ramasamy earned President Donald Trump’s endorsement heading into the Republican primary against Putsch. Acton ran unopposed in the primary.

Several Congressional seats in Ohio will play a role in whether the Republicans retain power in the House as voters in the Buckeye state head to the polls Tuesday.

Mortgage Rates Hit The Highest Level In A Month, Causing Lower Income Homebuyers To Drop Out

Mortgage rates continued to climb higher last week, causing both current homeowners and potential home buyers to retreat from the market, especially first-time buyers. Total mortgage application volume fell 4.4% compared with the week before, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index.

The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances, $832,750 or less, increased to 6.45% from 6.37%, with points increasing to 0.66 from 0.61, including the origination fee, for loans with a 20% down payment.

Evers Suing GOP-Controlled Joint Finance Committee Once Again

Gov. Tony Evers is suing the Legislature’s powerful Joint Finance Committee once again, arguing a 2018 law requiring its approval before the state Department of Justice can resolve civil suits is unconstitutional.

The move comes less than a year after the Wisconsin Supreme Court unanimously struck down other aspects of the committee’s approval process.

The challenge, filed on April 7 in Dane County Circuit Court, focuses on legislation passed by Republican lawmakers during a lame-duck special session just before Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul, both Democrats, took office.

Police departments statewide have issued a warning about the nationwide high school game known as "Senior Assassin," also called "Paranoia."

GOP Executive Committee Members Petition For Meeting On ‘Employment Issues’ Amid Criticism Of Chair Schimming

Members of the state GOP’s governing committee have petitioned for a special meeting next week to discuss “potential action regarding employment issues and board management” amid continued criticism of Chair Brian Schimming.

Documents obtained by WisPolitics show those pushing the effort are seeking a May 12 meeting, noting the executive committee has authority over matters related to employment, compensation, performance and organizational structure.

If the meeting is granted, it would come just three days before party activists are scheduled to convene in the Wisconsin Dells for the annual state GOP convention.

State Mental Health Council Releases Action Plan To Support Well-being Of Wisconsinites

Gov. Tony Evers' Interagency Council on Mental Health released a statewide action plan outlining how state government can better support mental health in Wisconsin.

Evers kicked off May as Mental Health Awareness Month with the release. The governor created the council to bring together state workers from across 10 different state agencies to examine the current mental health services landscape, identify root causes of mental health issues and develop recommendations to improve Wisconsinites' mental health.

Madison Democratic Socialist Candidate Doubles Down on Massive Tax Hike

The Democratic Socialist who is running for the State Assembly from Madison is not backing down from criticism of her plan to “tax the rich.”

DSA candidate Juliana Bennett took to X on Monday to defend the plan that would spike Wisconsin’s top income tax break to more than 17%.

"Paying 17¢ on your one millionth dollar of income isn’t extreme," Bennett said in a post. "Forcing Wisconsin homeowners to move because they can’t afford property taxes is extreme."
