On 04-01-2017 at 0837 hours, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a one vehicle crash on 357th Ave, approximately .66 mile West of 15th Street in Polk County.
Information was given that there appear to be 2 unresponsive victims in the vehicle.
Upon arrival, it was learned that both occupants in the vehicle had sustained fatal injuries from the crash.
The investigation shows that a 2004 White Chevrolet Malibu 4dr auto, was traveling East bound on 357th Avenue. The vehicle left the roadway to the right as it approached the bridge over a small creek, approximately .66 mile West of 15th St. There were no marks indicating evasive maneuvers, and the vehicle appeared to have drifted off the roadway.
After entering the South ditch for a short distance, the vehicle travelled over the bridge structure, and began to flip, as the right side tires fell. The vehicle then launched into the air, and later struck the opposite side bridge structure. The vehicle then fell into the creek on its roof.
Based on the information obtained it appears the owner of the vehicle Kevin W. Sommerfeld, a 29 yoa male from rural Lorain Township was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash. The apparent passenger was identified as Robert A. Carlson, a 56 yoa male from rural Burnett County. Both occupants suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash.
Assisting the Polk County Sheriff’s Office were the Lorain and Frederic Fire Departments, and First Responders. The Northland Ambulance Service, along with the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office. This matter is being in investigated by the Polk County Sheriff’s Department.
