Multi-County High Speed Pursuit Results In Felony Conviction For Hayward Man

SAWYER COUNTY -- The Court has sentenced Steven W. Martinson Jr, of Hayward, WI, on convictions stemming from a high speed pursuit that occurred in November 2020.

DrydenWire published a post on November 7, 2020, stating that the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office had arrested Martinson following a high-speed pursuit that occurred around 3a.

The pursuit began after a Deputy attempted to stop Martinson’s vehicle for speeding. Instead of stopping, Martinson accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Martinson’s vehicle was ultimately stopped with the use of tire deflation devices. Martinson was taken into custody and appeared for a bail hearing in Sawyer County Circuit Court on November 9, 2020 and the Court placed him on a $1,000 cash bond.

A criminal complaint was filed on November 23, 2020 charging Martinson with Class I Felony Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer and Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia.

Martinson appeared in Sawyer County Circuit Court most recently on November 9, 2021 regarding his charges and entered a plea of No Contest to his charge of Class I Felony Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer. The Court accepted his plea and found Martinson guilty. His charge of Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia was dismissed but read in.

The Court ordered a withheld sentence for Martinson with 2 years of probation.

Conditions of probation will require Martinson to complete any counseling and programming deemed appropriate by his probation agent, and follow through with recommendations. Martinson also paid over $500 in court costs and fees.
