Multiple Agencies Work Together to Locate Missing Elderly Hunter

SAWYER COUNTY -- On 09/23/17 at 9:28 p.m. The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office received a call of an elderly 83-year-old male who had not returned home after hunting on the West Fork of Chippewa River in the Moose Lake area. Sawyer County Deputies assisted by Sawyer County Search & Rescue, the Round Lake Fire Department, the City of Hayward Fire Department and Air Boat, the Wisconsin DNR and Sawyer County Ambulance EMTs & Paramedic, responded to the area. A staging area was established at the Round Lake Fire Department on Pine Point Rd.

The Air Boat was launched and bean a water search of the area. The elderly male's vehicle was located parked and unoccupied not far from the staging area. Volunteers from Search & Rescue began a ground search of that area, while Search & Rescue K-9 tracking teams were preparing to deploy. A few minutes later, voice contact was made with the elderly male and he was located by the ground search team.

The elderly male, who advised he had gotten turned around and became lost in the dark, was found to be in good condition. He was escorted an awaiting ambulance by the ground search team, at which time he was assessed by the ambulance crew. The elderly male then drove himself to the Round Lake Fire Department staging area, where he thanked everyone involved in the search for their efforts.

The Sawyer County Sheriff's Department thanks Sawyer County Search & Rescue, the Round Lake Fire Department, the City of Hayward Fire Department, the Wisconsin DNR, and Sawyer County Ambulance for their assistance and excellent work in locating the missing elderly male. This is another fine example of the on-going cooperation and dedication of each of these entities, working together as a team to help to keep citizens of and visitors to Sawyer County safe.
