Today I am thankful for the citizens of the 73rd assembly district for their trust in me to represent them in the Wisconsin State Assembly. I am also deeply grateful for my friends who have helped shape who I am as a person.
One of the greatest privileges of my life has been meeting so many amazing people from incredibly diverse backgrounds. Working with American Indian tribes, I've befriended some of the most generous and caring people on the planet. I've been inspired by so many mentors, one of whom is a Persian-American immigrant that came to the United Stares with nothing more than a dream. She raised two beautiful and successful children, one a dentist and the other a Harvard graduate who now works to protect our national security. I've witnessed so many advocates for people with disabilities who have fought harder than anyone has for anything, just to not be left in the shadows. My friends of color have carried the torch of civil rights into the 21st century, while my courageous LGBT friends have proudly stood strong and created a new movement of my generation.
The colleagues that I've had the honor of serving with, from both sides of the isle, have taught me countless invaluable lessons. One in particular is the son of a refugee that fled Nazi occupied Greece during WWII. We formed a close friendship in the legislature and I have never met another colleague with his combination of wisdom and work ethic. Last night he shockingly lost his seat through no fault of his own. I promise to carry on his legacy and that of his fathers in all that I do.
Today as I reflect on last night results, I can't keep from thinking of the deep disappoint that I feel and how that is magnified by so many that mean so much to me. I want them to know, and everyone for that matter, that I ❤️ them and that I will continue to fight every day to improve the lives of others. I wish all the best to everyone that was elected last night and I hope to be able to work together for a brighter future for all. Even with the bumps and roadblocks that inevitably will come our way, our best days are ahead.
Finally, I want to thank my loving wife and children. They are my rocks and my wife always had the wisdom to keep me on the right path. For them and for you all, I am eternally grateful.
