Northwood Tech Earns Gold Military Friendly School Designation for 2026-2027

NORTHERN WISCONSIN — Northwood Technical College has earned Gold status as a 2026-2027 Military Friendly School in the small community college category, advancing from its Silver designation in 2025-2026.

The Gold designation places Northwood Tech among the top colleges nationwide for its support of military-connected students and their families.

The 2026-2027 Military Friendly Schools list marks the program’s 17th year. More than 3,200 schools participated in this year’s survey, with 878 earning designation and 830 receiving special awards for exceeding the standard.

“Earning the Military Friendly designation is more than a badge of honor; it is a reflection of an institution’s deep-rooted values and strategic commitment to those who served. These schools don’t just open doors for veterans and military spouses, they build sustainable pathways for academic success and long-term impact. Their support is transformative, proving that investing in military-connected students is both a moral imperative and a standard for educational excellence,” said Kayla Lopez, vice president of memberships for Military Friendly.

Viqtory bases the designation on public data and responses from a private survey and evaluates schools through a formal assessment. The organization scores schools on retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence and default rates, with a focus on student veterans. With input from the Military Friendly Advisory Council, Viqtory determines the final rankings. Schools can earn Gold, Silver, Bronze or Military Friendly status.

“Being recognized as a Gold Military Friendly School reflects our Students First commitment to those who have served,” said Dr. John Will, president of Northwood Technical College. “At Northwood Technical College, we focus on meeting veterans and military-connected students where they are, with flexible options and hands-on training that lead directly to in-demand careers.”

Northwood Tech supports military-connected students with a veteran services coordinator at its Ashland, New Richmond, Rice Lake and Superior campuses. The coordinator helps students navigate program selection, application and enrollment, access academic and nonacademic support, and use military benefits or receive credit for prior training.

“This award reflects our dedication to creating a welcoming, supportive path to success for military students and their families, and it’s my privilege to support their journey as they navigate higher education,” said Stephanie Smith, veteran services coordinator.

Northwood Technical College will be showcased in the 2026-2027 Guide to Schools in the April issue of Military Friendly.
