Officer-Involved Shooting In Chippewa County

CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI -- The attached press release is referencing the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Department assisting the Chippewa Falls Police Department on August 1, 2019.


(Press Release) — On Thursday August 1st, 2019 the Eau Claire County Regional SWAT Team responded to a mutual aid request to assist the Chippewa Falls Police Department with a barricaded subject at the Indianhead Motel who was reportedly threatening violence with a gun.

The suspect was ultimately shot during the incident and has been identified as 48 year old Christopher A. Knyphausen.  

The deputy involved is Deputy Adam Prorok who is a member of the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office and is assigned to the Eau Claire County Regional SWAT Team.  Deputy Prorok has 8 years of law enforcement experience and is a firearms instructor for the Sheriff’s Office.

The Eau Claire Police Department is continuing its thorough investigation by experienced and independent investigators from their agency.  The investigation review will include examination of deputy and witness statements, squad car and/or body camera video, forensic evidence, and other information related to what led up to this incident.  At the conclusion of the investigation a full disclosure will be provided by Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell.

Per department policy and best practice, the Deputy involved in the incident is on administrative leave/assignment pending review of the investigation. The Sheriff and Administrative Staff have confidence in the decision making actions and professionalism of the Deputy involved. We further believe the independent review will yield the same results.
