An officer-involved shooting (OIS) took place this morning, Saturday, January 29th, 2017, in Eau Claire, Wis., that resulted in the death of the 49-year-old male subject.
The Eau Claire Police Department (ECPD) says that the incident occurred shortly after 7:00 a.m. after receiving a report of a man with a gun.

In a press conference shortly after 3:00 p.m, Eau Claire Police Chief Staniszewski stated that there was a male subject, armed, and standing in the parking lot at Scottish Inn and Suites. The Subject was pointing his gun at cars and people nearby. An ECPD officer arrived at the scene and there was a confrontation with the subject. During this confrontation, the ECPD officer discharged his weapon and the subject – a 49-year-old male - was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The officer that discharged his weapon is a 19 year veteran of the ECPD, according to Staniszewski.
Staniszewski also stated that per Wisconsin law, an outside agency must conduct the investigation and stated that the La Crosse will be handling this investigation.
