Don’t plan supper for Saturday night, November 19, not when there’s a great spaghetti dinner at the Spooner United Methodist Church at 312 Elm in Spooner, with each $7.00 adult ticket going directly to Alban’s House. Kids five and under eat free.
Even though the weather’s been unusually nice, we all know the snow’s going to start eventually and this is your opportunity to contribute to sheltering families whose only alternative may be to sleep in their pick-up truck they’ve parked at an out-of-the-way boat landing somewhere.
The Washburn County Homeless Coalition, formed not that many years ago, wracks their brains every month for answers to help those most in need. Help beyond the food program through the Indianhead Community Action Agency (ICAA)and the Connections Thrift Store and the many services Washburn County offers those in need. Their newest venture, Alban House is not a domestic abuse shelter but a home in Spooner that offers a warm place to sleep and eat and a place for those folks that never thought they’d be in this condition, who just needed a safe and comfortable place to just breathe.
According to Dawn Schliesmann, head of the ICAA, “Last year the newly created facility that was lent by the St. Alban congregation in Spooner, their former parsonage, was operated almost totally through a federal grant. This year the grant money was less, so we are now looking for creative ways to fund raise in order to keep this house available for those in need. The spaghetti dinner is just one of the ways we plan to earn funding and we’re hoping to be successful in our first of many ventures.”
Alban House has been in operation for a year and the coalition admits they’ve learned a lot through the process. “We’ve had our success and a few failures, but we did our best and the people we were able to help with shelter were grateful. Along with a place to live, people on our board helped them find permanent housing and jobs, even driving them to interviews.”
The basement renovation project at the Alban House is already underway to create a second ‘house’ downstairs so another family can be housed, so by sitting down and having an Italian supper, the funds will allow other families in need to be able to eat, sleep and have all the amenities of home.
Not only will you get a great meal put together by the homeless coalition board members, but there will be a bake sale, many of the items coming from the good people of the United Methodist Church, followed by drawings for some great prizes.
What’s not to love? Pasta, desserts and drawings, and best of all, no dishes to do. Win/win
