RICE LAKE, WI — The Rice Lake Police Department is seeking information regarding an attempted fraudulent check cashing incident that occurred on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Johnson Bank, located at 2019 Cenex Drive.
According to authorities, an unidentified white male, described as wearing a neck brace, attempted to cash a check at the bank. The individual presented a Minnesota driver’s license and a Social Security card, both of which matched the name on the check. Bank tellers, however, became suspicious, stating that the man in the vehicle did not resemble the individual on the driver’s license.
When the bank declined to cash the check, the subject left the premises. Witnesses noted that the suspect was driving a Subaru, believed to be a Legacy model, with no front or rear license plates.
The check in question belonged to a local victim and had reportedly been placed in their mailbox as outgoing mail. Fortunately, Johnson Bank and the victim did not suffer any financial loss in the incident.
Due to the positioning of the bank’s security cameras, no clear image of the suspect was captured.
Investigators are urging anyone who may have experienced similar incidents or has information about the suspect to contact Investigator Bohl at 715-736-0628.
