Prentice’s Dale Heikkinen Named 68th Assembly District First Responder Of The Year

MADISON – Yesterday, in a public ceremony, the Wisconsin State Assembly recognized outstanding First Responders from across the state and presented each award recipient with a legislative citation.

Rep. Rob Summerfield (R-Bloomer), after seeking and receiving many nominations, named Former Volunteer Police Chief of Prentice Dale Heikkinen as the recipient of the 68th Assembly District First Responder of the year Award.

“Dale embodies what it means to serve and have pride in your community,” Representative Summerfield said about Heikkinen’s nomination. “Dale cares deeply about the history of Prentice and what it has become. He loves telling stories about the Fire Department and the years he’s grown up watching the Village of Prentice flourish.”

Heikkinen had been a member of the Prentice Fire Department for over 63 years, serving as firefighter, training and safety officer, lieutenant, captain, secretary, treasurer, assistant chief, and chief. He retired in July of 2025.

“Dale is a strong advocate for volunteering and community service, dedicating many years to the Prentice Fire Department. Dale believes that volunteering makes you live longer. I am happy to have nominated Dale and recognized him for his years of service, saving lives and leaving a lasting impact on the community. Thank you, Dale for serving our citizens so well.”

The “First Responder of the Year” award was created in 2019 to recognize our outstanding first responders who serve our communities and help keep our citizens safe.

Each State Representative asks for nominations from their district for individuals who demonstrate selflessness, dedication, and serve their community well, and then have the difficult task of selecting one of the nominees to honor. Any type of emergency service responder can receive this award.

During the floor session yesterday, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed a resolution declaring October 14, 2025 as First Responders Appreciation Day in Wisconsin.

Rep. Rob Summerfield represents the 68th Assembly District which includes Chippewa, Price, Rusk, and Taylor counties.
