News Release - The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northwest Region office in Spooner, WI is holding a public hearing to consider the Section 84.295(10) future expressway aspects of the proposed improvement of US 53 in Washburn County.

The public hearing is planned for Wednesday, February 22, at the Spooner Agricultural Research Station located at W6646 WIS 70, Spooner, WI 54801. The public hearing will be conducted from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Interested persons may attend anytime between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to review displays and other hearing materials, ask questions, and provide testimony.

The traditional-style portion of the public hearing will begin at 6 p.m. and will end when all interested persons have provided testimony or 7 p.m., whichever occurs first. The traditional-style portion of the public hearing will begin with an informational project presentation prior to accepting traditional-style testimony from the public.

The proposed action consists of the adoption of a map that establishes the location and right-of-way widths for future improvements to US 53 between the Barron/Washburn County Line and WIS 70. Communities in the study area include the towns of Beaver Brook, Long Lake, Madge, and Sarona.

The proposed action does not include immediate programming of construction funds but is designed in such a way to allow incremental construction and funding over time. The long-term vision and management strategy used by this proposed action allows incremental improvements and funding strategies to ultimately achieve the comprehensive system goal of improving the expressway facility.

When warranted, County D and WIS 253 could be relocated on new alignment near their current locations and an overpass could be constructed over US 53 for both locations. Local road connections would allow for access between US 53 and the area surrounding the current intersections. In addition, several sections of the existing local roadway system would be altered to ensure internal local road system continuity and access to US 53.

No residential or commercial relocations are required for the proposed action. One existing private access point to US 53 would be relocated to connect to the local road network.

The public is encouraged to attend the public hearing to learn more about the proposed improvements and provide input. Project maps and other information will be on display and WisDOT staff will be available to explain the proposed improvements and answer questions. Information on how to present verbal and written testimony will be provided at the public hearing.

The meeting facility is wheelchair accessible. Hearing impaired persons needing assistance may call the Wisconsin Telecommunication Relay System (dial 711). To allow time for arranging assistance, please call no later than three working days prior to the hearing.

For additional information about the proposed improvements, interested persons may contact the WisDOT project manager, Marc Bowker, W7102 Green Valley Road, Spooner, WI 54801, (715) 635-4975 or send e-mail to Marc.Bowker@dot.wi.gov.
