This Independence Day weekend, I'm celebrating the freedoms and principles enshrined in the Constitution of the United States of America.
While celebrating America should be something our whole nation can all agree on, the foundation of our country is under attack from the Left. The liberal Democrats who control two branches of the federal government are fighting to take us back to an age of tyranny where our inalienable rights are no longer respected. However, the wisdom of our founding fathers laid out a system of checks and balances to prevent radical factions from swiftly infringing on the God-given rights that the Constitution protects.
In the face of protests, riots, and firebombings attempting to intimidate Americans from doing what's right and standing on principle, our Constitution still stands strong, thanks to the actions last week from the Supreme Court. The Court's recent decisions have shown the utmost respect for our government's founding document. These new decisions uphold that the rule of law and our Constitution make America great.
While the Left wants to remove every semblance of God in the public square, the Supreme Court protected the freedom of religion again. Now, that doesn't mean freedom from religion as the authoritarian leftists want — but the free exercise to live and act according to your conscience and faith. Government censorship and suppression of faith are not American. So, when a public school coach wants to send up a prayer of thanksgiving to God after a football game, he has the constitutional right to do so. The First Amendment protects our right to practice our religion in the public square freely. I’m grateful that the Supreme Court agrees.
And while the reactionary left is ready to come for our guns, the Supreme Court defended the 2nd Amendment with a decision striking down regulations that said citizens needed “proper cause” for a concealed carry license. Our right to self-defense is “proper cause.” Frankly, I believe we need to ensure Wisconsin does even more to protect our constitutional right to keep and bear arms, which is why I’m in favor of passing a constitutional carry law in Wisconsin.
What is even crazier than trying to demolish our constitutionally protected rights is when the Left tries to create one out of thin air. That’s essentially what the Supreme Court decided in the Dobbs decision this month. The Court said the alleged “right” to an abortion, as was so shockingly determined in Roe, is not found anywhere in the Constitution. Thankfully, our Supreme Court sent this issue back to the states, where it always belonged. When I’m governor, I promise to stand up for the laws we already have on the books and uphold the self-evident American right to life for the unborn.
Now, more than ever, we need leaders who will stand up for America. It’s not going to be easy. We’ve seen the kinds of intimidation tactics that the Left likes to use to try to stop those defending freedom. When 100,000 protesters came to Madison to try to stop Scott Walker and me from doing the right thing, and even when we received death threats, we didn’t back down.
As your governor, I’ll stand up for the Constitution and your rights. I stood for freedom yesterday, I stand for freedom today, and I’ll stand for freedom tomorrow. You have my unwavering word.
May God bless you and your family this Independence Day weekend.
