GRANTSBURG, WI — Representative Angie Sapik is proud to honor and nominate Grantsburg Fire Chief Cory Barnette for the prestigious 2023 First Responder of the Year award. Chief Barnette's exceptional bravery and selflessness, showcased during a recent incident, have proven him invaluable to the community.

In the early morning of July 2, 2023, Burnet County dispatch received a distress call regarding an individual lying on the road in the Village of Grantsburg. EMS was dispatched to the scene, but the situation quickly escalated when the individual became combative and brandished a firearm, threatening the EMS personnel.

Amidst this dangerous situation, Chief Barnette fearlessly approached the individual and initiated communication. He managed to de-escalate the tense encounter using his quick thinking, practical communication skills, and unwavering courage. He successfully convinced the individual to surrender the firearm before the arrival of law enforcement.

Chief Barnette's heroism on that fateful morning prevented what could have been a potentially violent and tragic outcome. His extraordinary actions exemplify the qualities of a true first responder and highlight his unwavering commitment to protecting the community.

Although this incident is only a tiny portion of Chief Barnette's remarkable contributions to his community, it showcases his dedication to serving and supporting law enforcement and EMS. He consistently makes himself available for any duty he asks, no matter the magnitude, readily responding to fires, crash scenes, helicopter landing security, medical calls, and law enforcement assistance requests with eagerness and positivity.

Chief Barnette's leadership within the Grantsburg Fire Department is commendable, and his unwavering dedication sets a remarkable example for all first responders. He is an outstanding leader and a role model for those who aspire to serve their community with the utmost integrity and bravery.
