Rep. Green Votes for Tax Relief, Education Funding

MADISON, WI – Representative Chanz Green (R-Grand View) issued the following statement after voting for a package last night that would have returned $1.8 billion of the state surplus back to taxpayers and Northern Wisconsin schools:

“This deal took months to finalize, and I’m glad we were able to get it across the finish line in the Assembly. This surplus exists because legislative Republicans held the line during budget negotiations with Governor Evers, whose proposed budget would have put the state into a deficit. Unfortunately, the Senate was unable to deliver for Wisconsin taxpayers.

The agreement wasn’t perfect. I believe taxpayers should have received larger rebate checks, and I also believe the governor’s 400-year veto should have been addressed as part of the deal. That veto is one of the primary reasons property taxes will continue to rise. I hope the next governor reverses that disastrous decision so Wisconsin families can finally see meaningful, long-term property tax relief.

At the end of the day, however, this agreement would have provided immediate relief for taxpayers and much-needed support for schools across Wisconsin.”

The package included:

  • An additional $315 million in special education aid, raising reimbursement rates to 42% in 2025-26 and 50% in 2026-27.
  • $302 million in property tax relief to all school districts via the school funding formula.
  • $50 million in property tax relief by lowering technical college debt levies.
  • Eliminating the income tax on overtime and tips.
    • Eliminating the tax on overtime will save taxpayers $328 million over the next two years.
    • Eliminating the tax on tips will save taxpayers $101 million over the next two years.
  • Direct rebate payments of up to $600 for married couples and $300 for individuals who are full-time Wisconsin residents.

This package ultimately failed in the Senate, 18-15.
