MADISON, WI – On Friday, Governor Evers vetoed Senate Bill 176, authored by Representative Rob Summerfield (R-Bloomer) and Senator Romaine Quinn (R-Birchwood). Rep. Summerfield and Sen. Quinn released the following statement:
“I am deeply disappointed in Governor Evers for vetoing Senate Bill 176. This bipartisan legislation passed both chambers with broad support in committee and on the floor,” stated Rep. Summerfield. “This bill would have created a tax credit for all state and federal broadband grants, ensuring these critical funds could be used effectively and to their fullest extent.
“This legislation was not optional. It was essential in aiding broadband providers the ability to deliver the reliable connectivity that our rural communities need,” Rep. Summerfield continued. “This veto undermines that effort and represents a clear step backward for Wisconsin.”
“Supply chain issues and inflation are making broadband expansion difficult for our rural providers,” Sen. Quinn said. “This legislation would have helped expedite broadband projects. Unfortunately, Governor Evers would rather see the money stay in Madison than help connect more homes and businesses in rural, underserved areas.”
If passed, Senate Bill 176, would have created a nonrefundable tax credit on individual income and franchise taxes in an amount equal to 6.32 percent of the amount of any federal, state, Tribal, and local grant funding received for broadband expansion in Wisconsin.
