RUSK COUNTY -- A Rusk County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured and flown by helicopter to an area hospital while attempting to take a subject into custody on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

According to the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Rusk County Sheriff’s office with trying to make contact, and take into custody, a male subject for a mental health commitment.

At approximately 3:30p, Rusk County Deputies made contact with the subject at a residence on Broken Arrow Road in Rusk County.

While taking the subject into custody, there was an incident that caused one of the deputies to fall from an elevated position, hitting his head and knocking him unconscious. This required him to be transported by helicopter to a hospital in Eau Claire, WI.

The subject was taken into custody, transported to the Rusk County Jail, and later turned over to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting with the incident were the Ladysmith Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Rusk County Ambulance, Sheldon Fire Department, and Life Link III Helicopter.

The deputy, according to Sheriff Wallace, was released late last night and returned safely home.
