SAWYER COUNTY — After 4 days in trial, a Sawyer County Jury has returned a verdict against Manly McDermott, age 33, on the charges filed against him in Sawyer County Circuit Court for the 2021 Stone Lake area fatal shooting of Cary Lynn Elkin.
During the months following the homicide, the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from Wisconsin’s Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, Wisconsin’s State Crime Lab, and several Minnesota law enforcement agencies with the investigation.
In May of 2022, Sawyer County Sheriff Mrotek released the name of the suspect for the homicide, Manly M. McDermott, of Bemidji, MN. McDermott was in the custody of the Moose Lake Minnesota Correctional Facility serving a sentence for convictions on firearms charges.
Charges including 1st Degree Intentional Homicide were filed against McDermott in August 2024, and in November 2024 the Court found probable cause to bind McDermott over for trial. His jury trial began on July 13, 2026, and concluded with the jury’s verdict on July 16, 2026.
