Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office Investigating ‘Spikes’ Being Placed on Roads

SAWYER COUNTY -- The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help regarding the placement of "spikes" on roads, according to a press release from Sawyer County Sheriff Doug Mrotek.

(Press Release) -- The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating incidents where metal tire deflation spikes, also called “caltrops” have been found in the Town of Winter at the intersection of Old Highway J and Thornapple Grade, Hogsback Road, and on trails in that vicinity.

These are the only confirmed locations the devices have been found in Sawyer County, that the Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of.

Several vehicles have sustained tire damage after running over the spikes. The devices are four 2-inch spikes welded together and sharpened on four ends.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking that anyone who may have information about these devices or who has put them out, please contact us at 715-634-5213, or submit information through our Tip Line http://www.sawyersheriff.org/?page_id=202

These incidents remain under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin DNR.
