SAWYER COUNTY (DrydenWire) - A Sawyer County Jail inmate’s drug overdose in early 2024 has resulted in criminal convictions for two Hayward, WI women, including one who smuggled fentanyl into the jail. Investigators say the drugs, concealed inside the body of inmate Dana Barber, were shared among others in the cell block before one inmate, Nicolette Trepania, overdosed and had to be revived with Narcan.
Nicolette Trepania (pictured right), age 32, was sentenced in August 2024. Her charges were ultimately dismissed upon completion of a deferred agreement.
Dana Barber (pictured left), age 40, was scheduled to have a jury trial on her charges; however, she appeared for a Sawyer County Court hearing on October 13, 2025, and was sentenced.
