Segment Of WIS 40 In Sawyer County With High Crash Rate Proposed To Be Rebuilt

SAWYER COUNTY — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is holding a public involvement meeting to present a proposal to reconstruct a segment of WIS 40 between Bruce and Radisson.

  • When: 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1.
    • The meeting will be open-house style.
  • Where: Radisson Town Hall, 3751 N. Clark St.

This section of WIS 40 has a high crash rate. To address this and other needs, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing to:

  • Reconstruct WIS 40 from 0.3 mile to 0.9 mile south of Elm Creek Road on a new alignment.
  • Raise the roadway profile on the same alignment from 0.3 mile to 0.08 mile south of Elm Creek Road.
  • Remove trees and shrubs within the new roadway footprint.
  • Excavate and grade.
  • Replace culverts.
  • Place new asphalt pavement.
  • Place a high friction surface treatment from 0.3 mile to 0.08 mile south of Elm Creek Road.
  • Install centerline and shoulder rumble strips.

Construction currently is scheduled for 2027. Traffic on WIS 40 will be detoured via WIS 40, US 8, WIS 27 and WIS 70.
