Senator Quinn Calls For Removal Of Judge Dugan

Convicted felon must leave the bench: ‘Resign or face impeachment’

Senator Quinn Calls For Removal Of Judge Dugan

MADISON, WI – Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Birchwood) issued the following statement after Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan was found guilty of obstructing federal immigration agents during an arrest:

“Judges are supposed to uphold the law. It’s unbelievable to me that a sitting judge would obstruct federal agents to assist an individual who twice entered our country illegally and was facing battery charges in her court. A jury has now found Judge Dugan guilty of breaking the law.

Judge Dugan violated the duty voters entrusted in her. Further, the Wisconsin Constitution does not allow a convicted person to continue serving in an elected position. Therefore she must resign. If she does not, I am prepared to fulfill my constitutional duty as a State Senator and remove her from office by impeachment.

The question of her guilt has already been determined. The only question now is if she can continue to serve as a judge. The state constitution is clear. She cannot.”

Legislative leaders in the State Assembly have indicated that if Dugan does not resign immediately, the Assembly will begin impeachment proceedings. Under the impeachment process, if a majority of the State Assembly votes to impeach, the Senate may then conduct a trial and a 2/3 majority vote of members present would remove the official from office.
