Madison, Wis. – Governor Tony Evers issued 51 vetoes of the state budget, many of which will adversely affect Northern Wisconsin. On June 20th, he is on video in Superior committing to support one of the items. This deceitful about-face is one of many disappointing decisions. Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) issued the following statement:
“The Governor was presented with a budget that funded Northern Wisconsin’s priorities that have been long neglected by politicians in Madison. He travelled to Northern Wisconsin to brag about his support for these items and then, when the cameras were turned off, he thought he could zero out this funding and no one would notice. That may have been the case before, but Governor, now the North has a Senator who pays attention.
“The vetoes from Tony Evers create confusion in Sanborn and Ashland County when he had the chance through the budget to provide clarity. People are worried they will be driven out of their homes, and with the stroke of his pen the Governor invited more worry.
“We have a fish hatchery in the area operating at 30% capacity, and again with the stroke of a pen he removed $2.5 million in upgrades to sit unspent in Madison. Why waste taxpayer money like that?
“Perhaps most egregiously, he committed on video to a reporter in Superior to support sending $2.1 million to upgrade Pattison and Amnicon Falls State Parks. Today he removed that funding.
“I will not stand by and let these lies go unanswered. I will be bringing forth new legislation that already has the support of the Senate and Assembly to fulfill the promises that the Governor broke. When those bills get to his desk he will not be able to hide behind the budget. We will present him with another chance, in the light of day, to see whether the Governor actually cares about northern Wisconsin.”
