Madison, Wis. – Today legislation authored by Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Birchwood) and Representative Chanz Green (R-Grand View) to help Superior residents replace lead lines was signed into law. Senate Bill 56/Assembly Bill 59 allows Superior’s water utility to be eligible for federal funding that will offset a significant portion of service line replacement costs for both utility customers and the utility.
Quinn applauded the bill becoming law in a statement:
"Safe drinking water is vital to all Wisconsinites no matter which part of the state you live in. All residents across the state should receive the same access to safe drinking water funds. That’s why this legislation to include residents in Superior is so important.
"Representative Green and I championed this legislation among our colleagues and today Governor Evers recognized the need to sign the bill into law.
"Despite the best efforts by the Mayor of Superior to defeat this legislation, we will now be able to deliver real help to his constituents to replace their lead lines, just like any other resident can do everywhere else in this state.
"I was perplexed by the mayor’s logic to deprive helping Superior residents replace lead service lines. He even saw fit to come to Madison to testify against the bill in an Assembly public hearing. In his testimony he said, ‘I have cancelled a very busy day and travelled very far to explain to you the harm Assembly Bill 59 will impose on my city and my constituents.
"Even with the odd lobbying efforts against the bill, today it stands as Wisconsin Act 8 and it will have a real and lasting impact on the lives of the people of Superior.”
