Shell Lake Man To Serve Remaining Jail Time on Felony Fleeing Charges

A Shell Lake, WI man has been sentenced for his conviction on charges of Felony Fleeing an Officer. The Court ordered him to serve 6 months of confinement in county jail, with credit for 130 days served.

Jackson Smith, of Shell Lake, WI, was charged with Class I Felony Vehicle Operator Flee / Elude Officer late last year after an incident in which he led law enforcement on a pursuit through the City of Spooner.

DrydenWire.com reported on October 23, 2016, that Smith had been charged after leading law enforcement on a pursuit through the City of Spooner, WI on October 4, 2016. The charges against Smith stated that a Spooner Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling rapidly through the city of Spooner, “smoking” its tires, swerving and causing other vehicles to stop or pull over. When the Police Officer activated the police squad emergency siren, this vehicle did not pull over but instead accelerated and proceeded to cut corners and nearly collide with more than one vehicle; reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour at times. The vehicle reached US Highway 53 and eluded the pursuit of officers.

Spooner Police Department's subsequent investigation and interviews of many witnesses confirmed that the driver of the vehicle in question was Jackson Smith.

According to public record, Smith plead guilty on May 24, 2017, to this charge. A second charge of Class H Felony Bail Jump was dismissed but read-in by the Court. Public record also indicates that Smith was ordered to undergo a drug test on May 24 and that the test came back positive for drugs and Smith's Bail Bond was revoked by the Court.

At the sentencing hearing on July 24, 2017, Smith appeared while in custody. The Court ordered Smith to serve 6 months in County Jail followed by 3 years on probation. Smith received credit for 130 days already served.

The conditions of Smith's probation require him to complete an Alcohol and Drug Assessment and comply with a curfew of 9 PM – 5 AM daily.
