Shell Lake Police Chief Posts Statement On Death Of George Floyd

SHELL LAKE, WI -- Shell Lake Police Chief David Wilson posted a statement on Facebook late Thursday night on the death of George Floyd. You can read the statement in its entirety on the Shell Lake Police Department's Facebook page, or below.

Statement

“Protect and preserve life". I have heard that many times in my years in Law Enforcement and as your Chief of Police in Shell Lake. As I have watched, listened and read about the events surrounding the Minneapolis, MN story regarding the death of George Floyd, I cannot help but to feel troubled.

First, My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Floyd.

Second, as Law Enforcement leaders we must speak out against such behavior. Wrong is wrong.

As a member of Law Enforcement, my heart aches, and I cannot remain silent. Our profession should not condone such behavior by Officers of the Law. Like you I don’t know all of the facts that led up to this arrest. I do believe that all of the Officers involved should be held accountable; being held accountable, I believe, is vital. A thorough and objective investigation and appropriate corrections need to be made.

To be clear, the actions of Law Enforcement Officers anywhere impacts the public’s perception of Law Enforcement everywhere.

I want to assure all of you that the culture at the City of Shell Lake Police Department starts with the respect of our community members. If we don’t respect you, you do not respect us. As your Chief of Police, I take ownership of this Department. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns about anything. 715-520-2659, by text or call. PM via The Shell Lake Police Department Face Book page.

- Chief Wilson
