SHELL LAKE, WI -- Shell Lake High School senior Issac Crosby is being recognized as a Dairy Athlete of the Month in June by the Wisconsin Sports Network and Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. Issac, who is part of the 5th generation on his family’s farm River Valley Dairy LLC, located in Shell Lake, received this honor because of his balance of school and athletic achievements in basketball and baseball and the many farm responsibilities that he has taken on.
In addition to being team captain of the school’s baseball team, Issac plays guard on the basketball team. He is also very involved in the National Honor Society, Student Council, 4-H, a mentorship program, and his church, Spooner Wesleyan Church.
Issac plays a key role on his family’s farm, which was started by his great-great-grandparents in 1929. Working the farm with his parents and siblings, his role is feeding and caring for the livestock, including dairy cows, heifers, steers, dry and beef cows. His grandparents still live near the farm and are also involved. Together they milk 110 Holstein cows and finish around 200 head of dairy steer each year, and farm 1800 acres of cropland- which feeds all their cattle.
“My favorite part of being involved with the farm is during the fall when we harvest all of our corn. The weekends consist of long days in the fields, but it always is a cool process seeing all the machinery going and everyone working in the same field,” said Crosby.
Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Sports Network are excited to spotlight student-athletes who are actively involved on a Wisconsin dairy farm and participate in at least one WIAA-sanctioned varsity sport. Dairy is a vital part of the economy in nearly every Wisconsin county, whether urban or rural. Family-owned farms, dairy processors and dairy-related businesses generate thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of economic activity while contributing to local income and tax revenues.
