SPOONER, WI — Lee Weiss, a volunteer representing both Spooner Health and the Volunteers of Spooner Health, presented two local students with $2,000 scholarships each during a ceremony at Spooner High School on Wednesday, May 13. In addition, two non-traditional scholarships were also awarded this year.
Formerly known as the Auxiliary, the Volunteers of Spooner Health is a nonprofit volunteer organization. This dedicated group makes a significant impact by supporting various projects at the hospital and throughout the community.
Each year, the Volunteers proudly award scholarships to students pursuing careers in health-related fields. Applications are reviewed through a blind process, with applicants’ names removed. Criteria for selection include academic success, involvement in school and community activities, and unpaid volunteer work. The Volunteers contribute $1,000 toward each scholarship, which is matched by Spooner Health, bringing the total to $2,000 per recipient.
This year’s scholarships are presented in memory of Lu McLellan, Inez Shaffer, and Mary Sundeen—longtime active members of the Auxiliary/Volunteers organization. The 2026 recipients of the $2,000 Volunteers of Spooner Health scholarships are:
- In Memory of Lu McLellan: Daniel Rongner
- In Memory of Inez Shaffer: Devin Danielsen
- In Memory of Mary Sundeen: Emily Stariha & Brittany Clark
Congratulations to the scholarship recipients and best wishes as they pursue careers in healthcare. Spooner Health also extends its congratulations to all members of the Class of 2026.
