SPOONER, WI — Spooner Memorial Library's Outreach Librarian, Katy Larson, has been nationally recognized for her exceptional work connecting seniors to library services and community resources.
Larson received the Innovation in Senior Services Outreach Programming Award at the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS) Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, on Thursday, October 9.
The award is presented annually to a library, department, or individual who demonstrates exemplary outreach services to older adults. Katy’s recognition highlights her personal commitment to inclusive, community-centered programming and brings national attention to the impact of her work in Spooner and Washburn County.
Katy joined the library in 2019 as its first-ever Outreach Librarian. Since then, she has developed creative and impactful initiatives to bring the library outside its walls and into the heart of the community. Her major accomplishments include launching the Bibliodragon, one of the few bookmobiles in Wisconsin, and creating a StoryWalk to promote intergenerational literacy and movement in the local city park.
Larson is especially recognized for her ability to meet people where they are. From visiting rural townships on her bookmobile route to addressing food insecurity through the Books & Bread and Compassion Kitchen programs, her work prioritizes connection and care. Seniors have been at the center of many of her efforts.
In a nomination letter, one local senior shared: "She is such an asset to our Spooner community. All of her involvement in programs, from children to our senior population, is from the heart."
In response to the announcement of Katy’s award, Library Director Angie Bodzislaw shared: "I could not be more proud of Katy for this accomplishment. Her dedication to fostering literacy, food security, and community connection, especially for seniors, truly deserves recognition."
A public reception will be held in Katy’s honor at Spooner Memorial Library on Tuesday, October 28th, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Light refreshments and cookies will be served.
