Spooner Teens Have A Great Showing At The National Powerlifting Championships

Editor's note: the following is a submitted post from Tom and Carrie Cook who wanted to give recognition to several local athletes for their recent accomplishments.

SPOONER, Wis. -- We would like to give some well-earned recognition to the 3 individuals below for their accomplishments not only at the state level of competition but also at the national level of the USA High School Powerlifting Championships.

We would like to give a HUGE shout-out to the 2 local teens and their coaches that competed at the National Powerlifting Championships this past weekend in Chicago Ill. Jacob Hedinger and Allison Cook, both Junior’s at Spooner High School placed 38th and 5th in their weight divisions respectively. Powerlifting consists of 3 different disciplines -- squat, bench press, and deadlift -- where the competitors lift the maximum amount of weight they are capable of. Jacob had a combined total of 465 kilograms or 1025lbs placing him 38th in the nation. Allison lifted a combined total of 400 kilograms or 882 lbs, placing her 5th in the nation.

Both of these Individuals are coached by Kiko Murphy and assisted by Cole Cook and we would like to give a HUGE Thank You to both of them as well for their dedication to this sport.

Spooner had 3 individuals that competed in the Wisconsin State powerlifting championships in Appleton, WI two weeks prior with Kevin Retzlaff being the 3rd athlete. Jacob placed 22nd and Allison placed 2nd in the state championship in their weight class. All of the athletes have to lift a specific amount of weight for their weight class to qualify for the national championships and 2 of these 3 were successful in that attempt.

We would also like to give a huge thank you to Matt Dryden and everyone at “The Body Shop” in Shell Lake and Spooner for encouraging and supporting these local athletes on their journey!

Congratulations to all of these fine young individuals and their coaches for a job well done not only with their excellent State championship showing but also at this National level of competition.
