Spooner to Join Nationwide Reading of the Declaration of Independence July 8

SPOONER, WI — On July 8, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first read aloud to the American people. On July 8, 2026, those same words will once again be read across the nation, including Spooner.

The Spooner Semiquincentennial Committee invites the community to gather at Railroad Park on Wednesday, July 8, at 5:00 p.m. for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, joining hundreds of communities nationwide in commemorating this historic anniversary.

Although the Declaration was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, it was not until July 8 that it was first publicly proclaimed, allowing citizens to hear the document announcing the birth of a new nation. Two hundred fifty years later, communities across the United States are honoring that moment by reading the Declaration together.

Spooner is proud to be one of 720 participating communities representing all 50 states and five U.S. territories taking part in this nationwide observance.

The reading will be held at Railroad Park (Front Street by the arch) and is free and open to the public. Residents and visitors of all ages are invited to attend this meaningful community gathering as our nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and arrive a few minutes early. The reading is expected to last approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
