State Finds Spooner School District Appropriately Used All Title I Funds

At the November 14, 2016 Spooner Board of Education meeting, Title I leaders in the district were recognized for presenting their school-wide plan at the Cooperative Educational Service Agency #11 in October.

In a statement from the Spooner Area School District Board of Education President, Karen Sorenson stated to DrydenWire.com: "The district is looking for support in all areas of education, so that we can be successful. A referendum may be necessary in the future and the community deserves to know what we spend our funds on, and that funds are properly spent."

As a footnote to that recognition, it was shared by Interim Supt. John Burnett that at a September 2014 Board of Education Meeting, the community was informed that $400,000 may need to be paid back to the Department of Public Instruction due to misuse of federal Title I funds.

On June 26, 2015 in their letter to the district, DPI stated the finding was not sustained and no funds would need to be returned.

To be clear – DPI found no misuse of funds and the Spooner Area School District was not required to repay any money.

Below is the June 2015 letter from DPI in its entirety.
