SAWYER COUNTY, WI -- The Court has bound Manly McDermott over for trial on the criminal charges filed against him in Sawyer County Circuit Court for the 2021 Stone Lake area fatal shooting of Cary Lynn Elkin.

During the months following the homicide, the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from Wisconsin’s Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, Wisconsin’s State Crime Lab, and several Minnesota law enforcement agencies with the investigation.

In May of 2022, Sawyer County Sheriff Mrotek released the name of the suspect for the homicide, Manly M. McDermott, of Bemidji, MN. McDermott was in the custody of the Moose Lake Minnesota Correctional Facility serving a sentence for convictions on firearms charges.

McDermott appeared recently in Sawyer County Circuit Court from the custody of the Sawyer County Jail, and he is scheduled to appear again in January 2025.
