News Release - Top Cop and former Chetek Police Chief Mark Petersen proudly served as a law enforcement officer for 39 years, and served the City of Chetek for nearly 37 years. During Chief Petersen’s tenure, he was known for his strong leadership, care for the community, and going above and beyond for his officers, countless times. It’s estimated Chief Petersen’s tenure included 78,198 service hours and 256,000 patrol miles. Chief Petersen retired earlier this year.
In speaking to the legacy of Chief Petersen, Elk Mound Chief of Police Travis Hakes said:
“Chief Petersen has been one of the best people I have ever been employed by. He's a guy that honestly cares about his employees from department picnics to Christmas gifts paid for by himself every year. When I started my own Chief's position I model[ed] a lot of my management practices based on his practices… [T]here are several reasons why he would be a good nomination, but a 39 year career being that dedicated to both his employees and the public, in my opinion is deserving of recognition.”
In a farewell note, Chief Petersen said:
“The City has been good to me. I was able to put both my children through college. I will miss my staff, other officers I have known, the city crew and staff at city hall. You are blessed to have such a wonderful and dedicated bunch of employees to work with. I hope you will have considered me among that group.”
“Thank you, Chief Petersen, for the commitment you’ve shown to your community and employees,” said Attorney General Brad Schimel. “Not only have you kept your community safe, but your leadership has inspired the next generation of law enforcement leaders in Wisconsin.”
