Traffic Stop Leads To Felony 6th Offense OWI Conviction For Barron Man

BARRON COUNTY (DrydenWire) - An August 2023 traffic stop has resulted in a felony conviction of 6th Offense OWI for Justin Micheal Ausman, 43 years of age, from Barron, WI.

Ausman was arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol Spooner Post for operating a motor vehicle under the influence, 6th offense, according to a news release from the Wisconsin State Patrol.

On Sunday, August 6, 2023, at approximately 7:45p, a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper stopped a vehicle on County Road W for a speed violation and unsafe lane deviation.

The Trooper observed signs of impairment and a subsequent investigation, including standardized field sobriety tests, showed the driver, Justin Micheal Ausman from Barron, WI, was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant 6th offense.

Mr. Ausman was arrested and transported to the Barron Hospital for an evidentiary test of his blood and then to the Barron County Jail.

Online circuit court records show that Ausman was charged with 6th Offense Operating a Vehicle With a Prohibited Alcohol Concentration. A jury trial was scheduled in Barron County Circuit Court in July 2024, however, at a hearing on July 31, 2024, Ausman changed his plea to Guilty.

Ausman appeared most recently for a court hearing on September 27, 2024. The Hon. Judge James Babler ordered Ausman to serve a 6-year sentence with 1 year of initial confinement followed by 5 years of extended supervision.

Conditions of supervision will prohibit Ausman from possessing or consuming any alcohol or going onto any premises where alcohol is sold. Ausman will be required to undergo an Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment and comply with the recommended follow-up treatment. Ausman must also complete all evaluations, counseling, treatment, and follow-up recommended by the Department of Corrections.
