Train vs. Semi-Truck & Log Trailer Crash in Sawyer County

SAWYER COUNTY -- A train partially derailed following a crash with a semi-truck and trailer near the interstection of 63 and Kruger Road, according to a press release from the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office.

(Press Release) -- On 09/27/18 at 2:26 p.m., the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a train vs. semi-truck & log trailer crash near the intersection of U.S. Hwy 63 and Kruger Road in the Town of Hayward.

The caller advised that there were no apparent injuries.

Sawyer County Deputies responded to the scene, assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Town of Hayward Fire Department and the City of Hayward Fire Department. After responding units arrived, it was confirmed that there were no injuries, no fire, no fuel leakage, nor any hazardous materials concerns at the scene.

The crash occurred when the driver of the semi-truck and empty trailer was proceeding on Krueger Road towards Hwy 63 after leaving the Johnson Timber facility.  The driver of the semi-truck advised he did not see the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad train proceeding southbound on the tracks, at which time the semi-truck began to cross the tracks on Kruger Road. Before the semi-truck and trailer both completely crossed the tracks, the train collided with the empty trailer, pushing the semi-truck and trailer approximately 35 feet before it stopped, causing a partial derailment of the train.

The names of the operator of the semi-truck and the train crew are not being released at this time.  This incident remains under investigation.
