UPDATE: Sheriff Issues Update On Search For Norbert Anthony Dantzman

SAWYER COUNTY -- Sawyer County Sheriff Doug Mrotek has issued the following press release regarding the search for Norbert Anthony Dantzman.

(Press Release) -- The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate a missing persons case involving a California resident who went missing from the Winter Northern Lights Motel in the Village of Winter WI on Friday August 30, 2019.

89 – year old Norbert Anthony Dantzman (Tony) was reported missing to the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office on Friday August 30. Dantzman, a former resident of the area, traveled from California to Winter WI with family members to attend a family centennial celebration. Review of motel surveillance cameras shows Dantzman leaving the motel on August 30, at approximately 9:00am. The last sighting of Dantzman is believed to have occurred at the Norwood Trailer Court in Winter where eye witnesses indicated they observed an elderly male fitting Dantzman’s description walk through the trailer court and continue to walk north on County Hwy W.  Dantzman suffers from dementia and other cognitive issues and has been known to walk away in the past.

The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office along with additional search resources from the region assisted in searching. Extensive searches of the immediate area were conducted utilizing ground searches, canines and areal support. Search efforts continued on August 31 and September 1 into the late evening hours.  Local law enforcement, public transportation, hospitals and area businesses where notified as well as missing person bulletins (Silver Alerts) both regionally and nationwide.

Ground searches resumed on Friday September 6, utilizing members of the Sawyer County Search and Rescue Team, Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office along with Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources personnel. Teams executed extensive grid searches and drone coverage of the area where Dantzman was believed to be last seen.  At this time, efforts to locate or make contact with Dantzman have not been successful.

Mr. Dantzman is 5’9” tall, 136 lbs., with brown eyes, gray hair and glasses.  He was last seen wearing a light colored checkered shirt, black vest, black pants, black shoes and light colored cap.

SAWYER COUNTY -- Sheriff Mrotek on Tuesday issued a press release updating the community on the search for the missing man, Norbert (Tony) Anthony Dantzman, 89, in Sawyer County.

(Press Release) — On 08/30/2019 at 10:38 a.m., The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a missing elderly adult from the Village of Winter.  Sawyer County Deputies responded to the call and learned that Norbert (Tony) Anthony Dantzman, age 89 had gone missing at approximately 9:00 a.m. from the Winter Northern Lights Motel in the Village of Winter. Mr. Dantzman suffers from dementia and other cognitive issues.

Surveillance cameras at the motel show Mr. Dantzman leaving the motel at approximately 9:00a.m., walking north toward the Norwood Trailer Court.  Eye witnesses at the trailer court indicated at approximately 9:30 a.m. they observed an elderly man fitting Mr. Dantzman’s description walk through the trailer court toward County Hwy W and continue walking north on County Hwy W.

Sawyer County Deputies, Sawyer County Search and Rescue personnel, Wisconsin DNR, Winter Fire Department, family and community members searched the immediate area, utilizing drones, canines and executing grid searches. Mr. Dantzman was not located and the search efforts were suspended late that evening.

All mentioned agencies and search teams resumed Saturday morning.  The Wisconsin State Patrol added additional aerial support with an aircraft. The search continued into the evening hours.

Sunday morning searches resumed with the addition of the WI Canine Emergency Response Team, Civil Air Patrol, and the National Guard providing aerial support.

At this time there are no further leads.  The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department is asking the citizens of Winter, and the surrounding areas to check their trail cameras, surveillance cameras, and outbuildings to assist in continuing search efforts.

Mr. Dantzman is 5’9” tall, 136 lbs. with gray hair, brown eyes and normally wears glasses.  He was last seen wearing a checkered shirt, black vest, black pants, black shoes, gray hat with Marines emblem and glasses.
