UPDATE: Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office Forwarding Charges Of Homicide For Suspect In Cary Elkin Death Investigation

SAWYER COUNTY -- The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office says they are forwarding charges of homicide following the death of a deceased female in 2021, according to a press release from the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office.

On Friday, April 2, 2021, at 12:26 am, deputies from the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Hungry Lake Lane in the Town of Sand Lake for a call of a deceased female. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the body of Cary Lynne Elkin, 42, of Stone Lake, WI deceased in the residence from multiple gunshot wounds.

Evidence obtained during search warrants, interviews, and forensic analysis identified Manly M. McDermott, 29, of Bemidji, MN as the suspect in the shooting death of Ms. Elkin. The case will be forwarded to the Sawyer County District Attorney’s Office requesting McDermott be charged with 1st Degree Intentional Homicide.

McDermott is currently incarcerated at the Moose Lake Correctional Facility in Moose Lake Minnesota, serving a 5-year prison sentence for an unrelated firearms conviction.

Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend thanks to the following agencies for their assistance: the City of Hayward Police Department, Washburn County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Justice, Wisconsin State Patrol, Bemidji MN Police Department, Minneapolis MN Police Department, Cass County MN Sheriff’s Office, and the Hubbard County MN Sheriff’s Office.
