Benefit Fundraiser for Local Spooner 22-Year-Old Combat Afghanistan Veteran

Monday, April 10, 2017 | Submitted by Lisa Powers

I’d like to take a few moments to give a brief update on Ryley Holden’s status.  Ryley is a 22 year old local Spooner WIARNG 950th Engineer Company Combat Veteran that deployed from 2014 to 2015 overseas to Afghanistan.  Ryley has been diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiform, which is a very serious Brain Cancer.  He has just finished 6 weeks of Radiation Treatment along with daily oral Chemotherapy, with care being provided at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, 5 days weekly.  Ryley and a family member go down to the cities weekly and stay using VA Lodging at the Fisher House.

Ryley is currently feeling and looking good under the circumstances.  His spirits are light and hopeful!  He will be undergoing continuing care with chemotherapy monthly for up to 1 year under the health care direction of the Minneapolis VA Medical Center.  Ryley’s health condition is NOT service Connected and he is NOT in receipt of social security disability.  Benefits claims are in process, and hoping for a positive outcome.

Ryley does use the VA Health Care system and is incurring daily doctor visit co-pays expense, prescription co-pays and more bills are yet to come.  This care from the Minneapolis VA Medical Center is NOT free.  So far the family has paid $5000.00 plus in medical expenses, travel, and food, and it is not over yet.

The Spooner Community is having a Benefit Fundraiser on behalf of Ryley and his family on Sunday April 23rd from 1 pm to 4 pm at Tony’s Riverside Restaurant.  Stop out for a delicious Pulled Pork Dinner with fixings.  Take the afternoon to enjoy the opportunity to win a few of the very many items donated.  Here is a SHORT list of the some of the items you could win:  Picnic Tables, Cross Bow, Many Guns/pistols of all types (Over 15), 5 different vacation packages to places like a 10 days stay in Florida, and 7 days in Canada with a cabin and boat, 7 days stay on Lake Mabel in the UP of Michigan, 5 Days stay in a cabin in Crow Lake in Canada, and a $2,000 travel voucher to a Disney Trip, Long Lake Pontoon Rental, Sea Doo Rental, Lake Superior Boat Fishing Trip.   Gift certificates from Many local business’, framed prints, Green Bay Packers Jacket, and a Green Bay signed football, Milwaukee Brewers Tickets, St Paul Saints Tickets, ATV Rack, Hunting Stand, Quilted Blankets, Binoculars, an I-PAD, Turkey Cooker, Harley Davidson Items, Cord of Oak Firewood, handcrafted Cedar Chest, Booze, Wine, not to mention just a few of the long list of items you could win.
