MINONG, WI — On April 13th, 2024, Washburn County faced a significant fire incident on Smith Bridge Road in Minong Township, prompting the activation of the Command Center due to multiple fires with substantial growth potential, according to a news release from Washburn County authorities.

On April 13th, 2024, Washburn County was notified of a fire on Smith Bridge Road in Minong Township.

The Command Center was activated at approximately 4:00 p.m. due to multiple fires with significant growth potential. Evacuations were ordered for the area.

The evacuation location was designated to be Northwoods School in Minong.

The fire was estimated to have burned approximately 250 acres. Multiple agencies responded from the region to assist. These included: NW District IMT; Minnesota Fixed Wing Air Resources; North, South and Minong DNR Fire; Minong Fire; Chicog Fire; Shell Lake Fire; Spooner Fire; Wisconsin DNR Wardens; Wisconsin State Patrol; Washburn County Sheriff’s Office; Minong Ambulance; Gordon, Dairyland, Webb Lake, Bennett, and Scott Fire Departments; and Washburn County Health and Human Services.

We would like to thank Northwoods School and all responding agencies for their quick and efficient response for dealing with this emergency within Washburn County.

Currently, the fire is contained but will continue to be monitored throughout the evening by fire personnel.

There is no further threat to the citizens of Washburn County at this time.
