Washburn County Sheriff’s Challenge Coins

Washburn County Sheriff’s Challenge Coins

WASHBURN COUNTY, Wis. -- A challenge coin is a small coin or medallion, bearing an organization’s insignia or emblem and carried by the organization’s members. Traditionally, they are given to prove membership when challenged and to enhance morale. In addition, they are also collected by law enforcement members or agencies. In practice, challenge coins are normally presented by the Sheriff in recognition of special achievement by a member of the organization. Besides using coins for challenging, they are also used as rewards or awards for outstanding service or performance of duty. As such, they are used as a tool to build morale.

Coins are normally given to the recipient during a handshake, passing from the right hand of the giver to the right hand of the awardee. It is also normal for the giver to offer a brief explanation of the reason for awarding the coin.

The staff at the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office will receive a challenge coin personally from the Sheriff as recognition of their dedication to their duty and to enhance moral. The coin is given with a handshake, in the palm of the right hand, and those receiving or accepting the coin agree to adhere to the qualities listed on the coin.

  • Integrity: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles;
  • Character: the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual;
  • Honor: high respect; esteem
  • Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, without fear; bravery.
  • Leadership: the state or position of being a leader
  • Community: fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

“I am extremely pleased to present these coins to my staff, this office would not be successful without the good qualities they possess. All should be very proud of the staff at the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office. We could not do this job effectively without your support, thank you.”
