Bursitis of the hip is a very common condition that I see in the clinic. At Spooner Physical Therapy and Rehab, we love to treat bursitis as it is very responsive to conservative management. The most common type of bursitis we see is Trochanteric Bursitis. Trochanteric Bursitis is a condition in which the fluid sac or bursa that separates the outside hip bone from the muscles and tendons of the thigh becomes irritated.
The leading cause of this irritation is related to repetitive strain and is more common in women than men.
Signs and Symptoms of Greater Trochanter Bursitis:
- Persistent outside hip pain with standing or walking
- Pain in the hip when sleeping
- Tenderness along the outside of the hip
- Limping
- Swelling and warmth along the outside of the hip
Treatment for Bursitis:
The treatment for bursitis is very simple and most often patients can see full resolution in a few weeks. It is important remove the irritating activity as much as possible in the first few weeks of rehabilitation, and adding non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications as needed.
- 4 Way Leg Raises- Standing or laying down, whichever is easiest at first, will strengthen all hip muscles. 3 sets x 10 reps will do.
- Assisted Squats- Great functional movement to strengthen hips, form is key here; Keep weight back on heels and do not let your knees go past your toes. Hang on to a chair or a counter in front of you. 2 sets x 20 reps
- Myofascial Release/Soft tissue mobilization- Release muscular restrictions causing irritation over site.
- Ultrasound- The ultrasound treatment will help reduce inflammation and reduce recovery time.
- Aquatic Therapy- The pool helps to unload the joint stress with gentle and effective aquatic rehabilitation.
Bursitis is one of the more easily treatable conditions we see in the clinic. You do not need to live with the pesky persistent pain that bursitis brings. Call our offices today for a complimentary examination to get you back on track!
