Wisconsin DOT To Hold Public Meeting On US 63 Bridge Rehabilitation Project In Spooner

SPOONER, WI -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has announced a public involvement meeting to discuss the proposed rehabilitation of the US 63 bridge over the Yellow River in Spooner, Washburn County.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 5, from 5 to 6 p.m., at Spooner City Hall, 515 N. Summit St. A presentation is scheduled to begin promptly at 5 p.m.

Project Overview

The Yellow River Bridge, constructed in 1975, requires maintenance to ensure continued safety and functionality. WisDOT has proposed several rehabilitation measures, including:

  • Overlaying the bridge deck with concrete.
  • Repairing concrete surfaces on the bridge abutments and parapet.
  • Replacing concrete approach slabs.
  • Paving the roadway on both sides of the structure with asphalt.
  • Improving drainage adjacent to the bridge.
  • Replacing the guardrail on the west side of US 63.
  • Updating pavement markings.

The proposed construction is tentatively scheduled for 2028.

Traffic Impact During Construction

US 63 will remain open during the rehabilitation, but traffic will be staged in two phases:

  • Stage 1: Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on the west side of the bridge, controlled by temporary traffic signals.
  • Stage 2: Traffic will shift, with one lane maintained in each direction on the east side of the bridge.

Public Participation

For individuals unable to attend the meeting, project details, including a presentation and handout, will be available on the project website. Public comments will be accepted through February 19, 2025, via:
