BURNETT COUNTY (DrydenWire) - A criminal case stemming from a late-evening shooting north of Grantsburg, WI, has resulted in a lengthy state prison sentence for Michael Winquist, age 31, of Grantsburg, following a series of court proceedings that traced back to events reported on May 31, 2024.

According to a criminal complaint, a juvenile contacted Burnett County Dispatch shortly before 7:00 p.m. to report that an adult female had been shot inside the residence. While the call was ongoing, the juvenile advised that a second gunshot had been heard and that Winquist had shot himself. Law enforcement arrived to secure the scene, remove the juvenile to safety, and take Winquist into custody, beginning an investigation that revealed extensive blood evidence, multiple firearms, and serious injuries to both the victim and Winquist.

The criminal court case proceeded through bail hearings, contested plea negotiations, and judicial review before ultimately concluding on December 16, 2025, with the Hon. Judge Melissia Mogen imposing a multi-decade sentence.
