WASHBURN COUNTY — A Minnesota woman is facing felony charges in Washburn County Circuit Court after authorities say she drove the wrong way on U.S. Highway 53 for more than 30 miles while intoxicated, forcing motorists to swerve out of her path as she sped southbound in the northbound lanes at speeds approaching 100 mph.

The dangerous Memorial Day weekend incident ended when law enforcement officers from multiple agencies boxed in the vehicle and took the driver, Laura Fitzsimmons (26) of Duluth, MN, into custody before anyone was seriously injured.

Fitzsimmons is facing multiple charges, including felony reckless endangerment and operating while intoxicated.
