Wrong-Way Driver Causes Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash On Highway 53 Near Haugen

BARRON COUNTY - A two-vehicle crash on Wednesday in Barron County has resulted in one fatality and injury, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

WSP says that at 5:23p on Wednesday August 14, 2024, a crash occurred on US 53 SB at Hwy 53 SB 1/2 mile south of 28th Ave in Barron County near Haugen, Wisconsin.

The two-vehicle crash occurred on Hwy 53 in a construction zone south of Haugen.

Hwy 53 traffic was bidirectional in the northbound lanes at the time of the crash and there were delineator posts down the double-yellow centerline.

WSP says that the initial investigation and witness information indicated a minivan was passing other northbound vehicles in the wrong lane of traffic when it struck a southbound sedan towing a motorcycle trailer.

The operator of the southbound vehicle suffered fatal injuries. The operator of the minivan was flown by LifeLink to Eau Claire.

Traffic on Hwy 53 was detoured for approximately 3.5 hours.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Assisting agencies included Barron County Sheriff’s Department.
