In Memory of Bennett M. Smith

October 22, 1998 - August 20, 2025

Bennett Mitchell Smith passed away on August 20, 2025, in Barron, at the age of 26. He was a man full of love and life. Bennett grew up in Barron and attended Rice Lake High School. Known as a jack of all trades, he was involved in many groups and held countless certifications.

Bennett proudly completed Marine Corps training in 2017, after which he pursued a career in law enforcement. He began his journey as a corrections officer, dedicating several years to serving in the field. Ben’s leadership and presence were recognized early on, as he was consistently chosen to give commencement speeches at each of his graduations. In January, 2024, he realized his long-held dream of becoming a police officer when he joined the Barron Police Department.

Ben married the love of his life, Jenn, on May 20, 2023, in Altoona. Their love story began when they met at a gun store, shook hands, and the rest was history. Just over a year later, he became a father to his son, Colt. Bennett welcomed his son into the world with a smile and a heart full of passion. They shared an undeniable bond, full of silliness and love.

Bennett had a deep passion for firearms and was everyone’s go-to guy for advice, parts, and expertise. He also took great pride in pole vaulting during high school, dedicating himself to the sport with unmatched determination. His enthusiasm for his hobbies was contagious, and watching him dive into them was truly inspiring.

Bennett was deeply loved by his family and friends. He was made to be a dad, and Colt was fortunate to have had the time they did together, though it was never enough. Bennett was the most loving husband, a devoted son, and a cherished brother. To all who knew him, he was simply an amazing person.

Beyond his family, Ben was a great friend. His closest friends knew him as fun, adventurous, and courageous. Whether shooting, golfing, having bonfires, or just being outdoors, Bennett cherished every moment with them. His friends were a vital part of his life, and they can attest to the remarkable person he was.

Bennett is survived by his wife, Jenn; his handsome son, Colt; his parents, Barb and Jeff Smith; his siblings, Brennan and Bailey (Kyle); and many other loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and his paternal grandmother.

Bennett touched the lives of everyone who met him. In his honor, we ask that you help us raise awareness for LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) mental health.

Please join us for a visitation on Wednesday, August 27th, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Red Cedar Church in Rice Lake as well as one hour prior to the service at the church.
