In Memory of David M. Johnson

March 16, 1943 - January 21, 2022

David M. Johnson, age 78, a resident of Grantsburg passed away on Friday, January 21, 2022.

David was born in Frederic on March 16, 1943 to Herman D. and Doris V. Johnson.

David married his high school sweetheart Judy L. Olson on October 5, 1963 in Atlas.

He spent 13 years working as a computer programmer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Edina, MN. When the department moved to Kansas City, David chose to stay in the Grantsburg area and took over road maintenance for the Trade Lake Township for several years. He was later employed 10 plus years at Parker Hannifin as a night shift inspector while also being a substitute mail carrier. Finally, he became a full-time Frederic rural letter carrier until his retirement in 2006. His most rewarding job was the 35 years he raised purebred Limousin cattle on the family farm in Trade Lake.

David was a true sports fanatic and was considered a Grantsburg Super Fan. He enjoyed watching and being “hands on” helping to teach and coach. You could always find him at sporting events cheering on his grandchildren. He coached wrestling, played fast pitch softball, and was involved in weightlifting. He enjoyed operating the Zamboni for the Blizzard Hockey team. He was also an umpire for high school baseball and softball. He was a true community man who was always there to help out and was a proud member of Grantsburg football chain gang for 47 years. During deer hunting season David was in his ladder stand, and when the ice on Big Wood Lake was thick enough to hold his fishing house, he was ice fishing.

However, the most important thing in David’s life was his relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He wanted everyone to know Him as well, and did his best to be His hands and feet while on earth. His love and servant-heart was most evident with his wife, kids, grandkids and the rest of the family, as he would do absolutely anything for them at any time. David showed them and others he knew (and some he didn’t know) the love of Jesus not by just words, but by his actions as well.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Tom Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Michael (Miranda) Johnson; daughter, Brenda (Brent) Roufs; grandchildren, Brandon (McKenna) Roufs, Brooke Roufs, Britta (Zach) Williamson, Bryce Roufs, Shaylee Johnson and Archer Johnson; his sister, Janet (Ernie) Gafkjen; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 11:00 AM (visitation 10-11 AM) at Calvary Covenant Church in Alpha with Pastor Scott Sagle officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Grantsburg.
